Writer Kamal Bharti Arrested For A Facebook Post Criticising IAS Officer Durga Shakti Nagpal’s Suspension

Well-known scholar and writer, Kamal Bharti, was arrested in Uttar Pradesh yesterday for showing support to the suspended IAS on Facebook.

The recent controversy-ridden suspension of IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal is heating up day by day. In a recent development reported by NDTV, well-known scholar and writer, Kamal Bharti, was arrested in Uttar Pradesh yesterday, for showing support to the suspended IAS officer on Facebook.

The content that was posted in Hindi by Bharti stated that –

“While Ms Nagpal was suspended and charged with endangering communal harmony by ordering the alleged demolition of the wall of a mosque in Greater Noida in the holy month of Ramzan, officials in Rampur demolished a madarsa - or Islamic school - recently and also arrested its manager, but no one was suspended there.”

The writer further alleged that this was because the demolition in Rampur was carried out at the behest of UP’s powerful Urban Development Minister Azam Khan. Thereafter Bharti was arrested when a complaint was filed by the minister’s aide, on the grounds of promoting disharmony between two religious groups.

Though the writer has been released on bail, there has been no revelation under what section Bharti was arrested.

Tensions have started growing for the Samajwadi UP state government after it was known that Durga Shakti Nagpal, an IAS officer of the 2010 cadre has been suspended for reasons that were not true in the first place. The officer was suspended recently for demolishing the wall of a religious structure, which was motivated to lead riots in the region. However, the sub-divisional magistrate of Gautam Budh Nagar never demolished the wall of any religious structure.

Demands by netizens on social media to the opposition parties and IAS Officers’ associations to revoke her suspension have been growing. This has led the Center to intervene and has sought a report from SP on the suspension of the IAS officer through letters.

Party workers of SP have refueled the issue further – Narendra Bhati’s claim that he transferred the IAS officer in 41 minutes and Ram Gopal Yadav’s statement to the Center that UP can work without IAS officers further strengthens the fact that the IAS officer has been suspended and chargesheeted on whimsical grounds.
