J R D Tata created history on October 15, 1932, by flying tiny Puss Moth aircraft carrying post from Karachi to Juhu area. The historic event laid the foundation of Air India. Eight decades later - January 9th, 2015 is one such historical day, it marks Tata’s re-entry in the airline business after over six decades. Airbus A320 aircraft of Vistara, the full-service joint venture of Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines, takes off on its maiden flight — from Delhi to Mumbai.
Last September, the Tata Group had announced the formation of a 51:49 joint venture with Singapore Airlines to launch a full-service carrier in the country. Following initial hiccups, Vistara that stands for seamlessness, on December 18th, 2014 announced the launch of its operations from January 9, 2022 with flights from Delhi to Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
It plans to operate 87 flights in the first year, with five leased Airbus A-320s, and then scale it up to 301 flights by the fourth year with a fleet of A320s.
Even though it is a big day for the Tatas, after its unsuccessful attempts to launch an airline in partnership with Singapore Airlines in mid-90s, Vistara, is scheduled to make a low-key takeoff. However, it isn’t showing any restraint on Twitter; Vistara’s Twitter account which has over 5K followers has been bringing updates of its maiden flight for the social media hungry audience.
Launched on 11th August, 2014 on Twitter, Vistara has been quite actively bringing in live updates.

With this launch Vistara becomes the third full-service carrier in the country, after state-run Air India and private carrier Jet Airways. The aviation sector in India has been constantly under pressure with the shutting down of Kingfisher Airlines and dark clouds over Spicejet’s future.
Vistara’s new beginning hopefully brings a shine to its partners, the people and aviation industry of India.
