The online streaming business is still alive and online video streaming portal for Indian movies and TV shows Spuul is doing its bit by regularly bringing interesting content on the platform. According to NBW, Spuul has partnered with Star Plus, India’s popular TV channel for Hindi serials to stream its shows that come on the television channel 30 minutes after they are aired in India.
With this new partnership, users of Spuul not only from India but also from Pakistan would have the privilege to access Star Plus’ content including daily soaps like Diya Aur Bati Hum, Ek Nanad Ki Khushiyon Ki Chaabi – Meri Bhabhi and Pyaar Ka Dard Meetha Meetha Pyaara Pyaara and reality show Junior Master Chef among others.
The new move comes right after its earlier partnership with IndiaCast Media Distribution (a joint venture between TV18 and Viacom18) to make over 60 current and upcoming Hindi and regional language movies available for worldwide streaming on Spuul from the library of Viacom18 Motion Pictures, COLORS and Eenadu Television.
Earlier in the month of January, it had inked another deal with Yash Raj Films (YRF), to make the studio’s superhit movies instantly available on Spuul. Post this agreement, Spuul enabled movie buffs to access the evergreen catalog of YRF films.
The latest deal of Spuul is free for users but will have advertisements included, providing an ad supported business model. Spuul also provides the option for users to pay $4.99 per month for premium movies or $0.99 for every special movie streamed. Content for users is accessible on various platforms such as on popular mobile platforms, Facebook app, etc.
However, Spuul is not the only startup that is serving the online video streaming market. It has competition from giants like Google which has YouTube Rentals in place along with other startups like Box T.V, Eros Now, BIGFLIX. In fact iStream was another dominant player but it has shut its shop now. Though the reasons were not clear, my guess is that it failed to get support from the VC community in India since most of them are of the opinion that the market is still too early to be cracked and has limited sources of revenue.
Nevertheless, it is encouraging to see Spuul cracking regular content partnerships on its platform.
