Should Nirmal Baba Be On Social Media?

I hardly watch any television but this time when I went visiting my mum, I ended up watching a whole chunk of it. And how has the medium changed! Every program, be it news, science or comedy, has a presence on social media. Reminds me of the days of the dotcom boom when every company displayed a “www” everywhere. And this has been happening progressively across all mediums – TV, radio, newspaper, outdoor, etc. Recently a daily soap had a Facebook-style advertisement in the newspaper! So I wasn’t surprised when I heard the presenter of a particular program “Third eye of Nirmal Baba” announce that the viewers can also connect with him on Facebook or on Twitter.

Nirmal Baba

I visited the Facebook page, half expecting that it would either be deserted or in a state of neglect by page admins. But it was nowhere near to that; the sheer number of followers on Facebook could put large brands to shame. And the brand I’m referring to is a spiritual guru, Nirmal Babaji Maharaj who runs the Nirmal Darbar in New Delhi. And I wondered since when did the social savvy online junta believe in ‘spiritual gurus’. The answer seems to lie in the info section of the Facebook page that says ‘Devotees should visit this page and click LIKE BUTTON to get regular NEWS FEED from NIRMAL BABAJI’. Hence, we know for sure that 2,28,438 devotees ‘like’ the Facebook page for Babaji’s news feeds. And a whopping 45,846 fans are talking about them.

The wall is a spectacular show of sheer brand clout. There is not a single update about the brand (a person in this case) who continues to be elusive. All updates are about when a TV channel has added their program apart from the usual update from the cookie-cutter, ‘My ashirwad for everybody’. And the number of likes and comments for each of these updates is in 4 or 5 digits. As a social media believer, this is quite frightening to me. If the website does not give any information about the Babaji and his method of ashirwad, then what can one say about the Facebook page.

Curiosity got me to visit the Babaji’s Twitter page @nirmalbabaji and I was stunned to see 28,720 followers all geared up to be blessed by his tweets. The tweets are absolutely irregular and always skewed around his ‘samagams’ – mostly informing about bookings and cancellations with a rare ‘My ashirwad for everybody’ tweet along with information about a new channel where the TV program would be telecast. Currently, the program is on 30 channels as I was able to count them on the website.

The entire digital setup seems to be a really crafty one. As all your believers and so potential customers are on television, you broadcast your website and social media locations. When they visit the digital space, you push them to register for the samagams eventually. So much for conversions! The only information that is clearly explained on the website is how to register and where to pay and the cycle is complete!

The totally wrong social media presence shook me up. Here was a brand that defied all laws of social media – it is secretive, it is selling, it does not listen. It should have flopped a long time ago but it hasn’t.

What does one make of this? Social media helps you personify your brand - share your values and beliefs. However, for Nirmal Baba this seems unnecessary. He does not talk or engage, listen or solve issues in any of the networks. He only broadcasts about his services and one can see them selling like hot buns. He is surviving on the pure trust of his thousands of fans and followers; a social media presence is a mere namesake for him or rather another channel for sales and marketing.

Does this mean that other brands can violate social media too?

Well if you think you have an amazing clout offline and really don’t need to engage on social media, then you can. Consider the case of Dalai Lama being present on social media. As compared to Nirmal Baba, at least Dalai Lama has a much more better and active presence. The Facebook is more active and vibrant but then if you see the Twitter, he has got huge fan following with zero engagement. Simple reason is that the Dalai Lama has an amazing clout so even if he is just present, people will follow him.

Hence creating a trustworthy brand is a must for any business or startup. If you have a pathetic product or service, then despite hiring the best social media agency in the world, you won’t get results. Do you think otherwise?

Wow. I have never heard of Nirmal Baba, but his Klout number must be through the roof…check out the latest newsletter at TribeDesi.com, where I start by:

Right off the bat, I have one question to
you, the 20,000+ potentially social-mdia-connected, readers: who is
Nirmal Baba, and why is he so famous - and why I have never heard of
this social media phenom? In this age of social media, where most
bloggers/publishers/corporations would kill for “likes” or “followers”, the man
has over 231,500 likes - all with mundane content like “Currently samagams are in Delhi and Mumbai only.Booking is
closed. No samagam has been announced for any other city.No one should get
mislead by rumours of samagam in any other city. Whenever it is announced it
will be updated on website and TV”. That content BTW got 14,000 likes and
over 12,000 responses! What are we doing wrong? Who are all these social-media
    savvy Indians???
As the author of the article states, “What does one make of this? Social media helps you personify
your brand – share your values and beliefs. However, for Nirmal Baba this seems
unnecessary. He does not talk or engage, listen or solve issues in any of the
networks. He only broadcasts about his services and one can see them selling

    channel for sales and marketing….”

    Jai Nirmal Babaji Maharaj !!!
Author of this article should I done a better research before putting out some arbitrary comments without knowing or understanding the facts.

False Statement — “The entire digital setup seems to be a really crafty one. As all your believers and so potential customers are on television, you broadcast your website and social media locations. When they visit the digital space, you push them to register for the samagams eventually”
Fact - Its extreamely difficult to get reservation for samagam for followers of Babaji.  The information on social media sites is just a medium to keep the followers informed about these events, as devotees find it difficult office for via phone due to shear volume of calls. Any follower of Babaji will share my experience.  The use of social media is not a channel for marketing but massive effort for followers to keep them updated about the events and updates. As a follower I am really thankfull

There are several other non-sensical points made by the author with out any understanding what so ever.  My intend is to  strongly urge the author to refrain from hurting feelings of Babaji’s followers and retract whole article.

    • Rani

PK, I agree with you comments. Besides `Nirmal Baba` is an attractive topic for bloggers who wish to earn money using his name, as it attracts tremendous clicks.

      • http://twitter.com/oldfox004 Vinaya Naidu

        Rani,

This is a weird accusation that you have made!

Why should I want ‘tremendous clicks’ when there there are no organic search based ads on my blog? Do send me a screenshot if you see any!

Besides, do read my response to Pk above as the same response applies to you too.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

        • Mrinalini

I totally agree with Rani, Vinaya has made some very serious baseless allegations against Babaji, this is either a malicious plan to defame babaji or make money out of writing about him to get clicks.
I am a devotee of Babaji and take these allegations personally.

      Pk,

This blog only analyses social media presence of brands in India and studies its impact upon the masses. It is meant to be read by anyone who wants to understand the use of social media (and in some case the misuse too).
The social media presence of Nirmal Baba is flawed as it does not follow the rules of social media. Hence the topic - should he be on social media?

Social media isn’t about broadcasting nor it means sales or marketing. You could learn more if you explore our blog more. Hence, I reiterate, this post is about social media presence of Nirmal Baba, nowhere have I mentioned about the person himself.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts but this post shall remain, as it does not malign Nirmal Baba anywhere!

P.S: The social media agency involved can respond to my questions in this post. There is absolutely no need for Baba’s followers to respond here.

      • Pk

Apparently you seem to have watched Nirmal Baba’s episode on
TV, seen his website and social media sites.
You didn’t understand what Nirmal Baba is about.  You have never met him or you have nothing to do with him
either. So in simple terms, its totally unrelated subject to you.

If you don’t understand Nirmal Baba and no way associated
with him, what makes you write negatively about him?

Wouldn’t this be the very basic etiquette of participating
in social media, to refrain comments on totally unrelated persons/subject?

Also, you have a very poorly concocted, bookish and
incorrect understanding of social media.  Any
type of organization from UN, Govt, Celebrity to city authorities have presence in social media in order to reach out their
people.  As a follower of Nirmal Baba, events about Nirmal Baba is the only thing
for us that matters.  His presence in

social media is a boon for us.
I don’t think you are in anyway qualified to
        comment

negatively in this aspect as well.

If I post few negative & false comments about some person whom
you adore and pray, without knowing anything about him or her, wouldn’t you be
offended?  off course you will be &
        same in my case.

If you mention this blog is not for followers of Nirmal
Baba, you should take it out of public domain. If its on public domain and you write
        something negative about a

person whom I seek blessing from and he/she is totally unrelated
to you, I would definitely be offended and register my protest in whatever way
possible.   This is classic case of
defamation in the world of social media.

Yet, I still strongly urge you to take this blog down to avoid hurting devotees feelings.

      • Mrinalini

Vinaya you have taken Babaji’s Name in this article, you have made allegations against him, as Babaji’s follower I greatly feel the need to respond here. You have falsely accused him in this article, take out his name if you do not want us to respond !!

Madam Vinaya Naidu firstly when you write a blog kindly do your research properly. As when you start accusing and blaming others without rhyme or reason it is called being stupid and ignorant. Unless of course intention is to defame somebody.
If your understanding of “Spiritual Guru” is “A Brand” and understanding of “social savvy online junta” believing in “spiritual Guru” is a surprise - leads me to believe that you have been brought up as an individual without any religious beliefs or spiritual understanding of any kind. Your fickle play of words without any valid reasoning shows your intellectual inadequacy in writing indepth articles. FALSE -
”Here was a brand that defied all laws of social media – it is secretive, it is selling, it does not listen”  - IT IS NOT SECRETIVE - IT IS ON TV (??)!, YES IT LISTENS !! - PL LOOK AT PEOPLE ASKING QUESTIONS/GETTING ANSWERS/INTERACTIVE ON TV. FALSE -”He does not talk or engage, listen or solve issues in any of the networks.” - WATCH HIS TV EPISODES, THEY ARE MOST INTERACTIVE, LIVE QUESTION ANSWERS/ADVISE, PEOPLE SHARING EXPERIENCES ! FALSE- “When they visit the digital space, you push them to register for the samagams eventually.” - NO ONE PUSHES YOU FOR SAMAGAMS, DEVOTEES WAIT FOR MONTHS TOGETHER TO BE ABLE TO GET IN.MADAM SERIOUSLY EITHER YOU ARE MORE STUPID THAN I THOUGHT OR DOWNRIGHT MORON. MY ADVISE TO YOU - STOP WRITING ! IT’S TORTURE TO GO THROUGH SUCH BASELESS ARTICLES. AND YES - GO GET SOME WISDOM ! COMPARING SPIRITUAL GURU TO A BRAND ! WHAT NONSENSE !!

      Very well written.

Dear Indira the real and true devotee of any spiritual guru or faith/belief always do not react angerily to criticism and public opinions. They rather sit calmly and think wisely on the issues in circulation in public domain for what might have gone wrong, whether any introspection is needed by Nirmal Babaji and corrective measures to be taken to win the faith and belief of common man. I think huge money circulations and transfers by way of donations/dasbands on the name of a sole proprieter(Babaji) and not a Trust lead to all this non-sense ideas about a saint/spiritual guru/fakir who once was a very ordinary man and had seen many failures, struggles and hard times like many of us to decades ago and now a few selective blessed followers of babaji have been fighting and explaining to all that nothing is wrong with Nirmal Darbar. It is all voluntary and as per laid down rules of gods from time immemorial. The Sai Babaji of Shiridi never lead such type of life and all his life he did selfless service to the mankind without a price. The shiridi dham also came up after his death and is run by the bonafide Trusts. Waiting to see the massive temple at bhondsi,Gurgaon coming up with this huge Dusband/ public money and all these criticisms will be buried and die their natural death. The memory of people is very short in this country. I also feel that Babaji have wage a war against prevailing supersititions in society and exploitation of people on the name of remedies for appeasing gods/grahas etc. The simple way of prayer and service to poor, animals, birds etc. But certain things do not stand to logic and hence the public cry and oppositions. Here an analysis and intropection is needed and corrective measures taken to owe people back who got confused and disgruntled and not to issue curt orders for constructive and logical opponents or just silent them by utter ignorance e.g. jisko ana hai baba bula lengay jisko nahi ana hoga koi fark nahi paratha hai. This seems to be a dictorial type of statement. I neverthless wish Nirmal Babaji and Darbar all peace, prosperity and success and pray to the only One Almighty GOD whose powers Babaji is using for early appearance of Babaji in Public and with new system of preaching and bless people…….SC Joshi, [email protected]

    Excuse me madam,
Who are u? U think that typing such rubbish articles will take U up and u will land on the 7th sky ,eh?
I am 16, presently in 11th class. When I was in 8th I used to study a lot but my marks seemed to land up only at 75%(maximum).
But when my mother told me about Babaji’s samagams, I felt like I was blessed.
In the month of march(2102) my 10th result was out. And do u know what is my CGPA,
I would proudly tell u, ” MY CGPA IS 9 ” that is, 90% and its all bcoz of BABAJI.
Shocked ,huh? U need to be.
Even I can also write such artcles, but against YOU.

SO U NEVER EVER DARE TO WRITE SUCH ARTICLES AGAINST MY GURU.
