The new year saw the release of the legendary Sholay in 3D format on the 3rd of January. It has been 38 years since the release of the classic film Sholay, and everybody has been looking forward to its 3D version. But, in a world that has changed to digital with increased choices for movie goers, how can film makers woo the new generation audiences and get them excited about a 3D version of an iconic film that belonged to earlier times?
Understandably, Sholay Media and Entertainment, the production company which has acquired the rights of the film, released an online and mobile game called ‘Sholay: Bullets of Justice’, in a bid to engage the digitally savvy young generation.
Developed by Hungama and Gameshastra, ‘Sholay: Bullets of Justice’ can be played on Android and iOS devices as well as Facebook. The 4 level, single player action-packed game based on the film’s script, enables players to play as Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) or Veeru (Dharmendra). The whole game narrates the story of two petty thieves - the laconic Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) and loquacious Veeru (Dharmendra) helping the upright nobleman and disabled veteran cop Baldev Thakur (Sanjeev Kumar). True to the film, the game too has a “wild west” feel and also portrays the locales of Ramnagar with each character having its own stylized animations.
One needs to take out the dacoits before their health bar depletes as they get hit by the dacoits using advanced weapons on a moving goods train. One can unshackle Basanti (Hema Malini) from the jaws of the dacoit Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan) and balm the sadness of the disconsolate Radha (Jaya Bhaduri) by bringing the maniac to justice.
Features of the game include yesteryear weapons that give you a feel of the movie, advanced weapons like rifle, sterling submachine guns, double barrel shot gun, dynamites, an unlimited ammo supply for the revolver and the option to throw grenades and use combos of slide & kick.
In addition, Sholay 3D is also being promoted through a Facebook contest on the UTV Motion Pictures Facebook page.
With the ‘Bullets of Justice’ game, Sholay 3D has followed the recent trend of movie promotions in the country, where games based on the movie characters have been released for the mobile and Facebook generation. For Dhoom 3 promotions, a 3D bike racing game ‘Dhoom3: The Game‘ was created for all mobile devices, and has reportedly crossed 7 million+ downloads as of January 1. The game has players racing down the streets of Chicago as Sahir, the Dhoom:3 Movie Anti Hero as they escape from ACP Jai Dixit, Ali and the Chicago Police, while dodging obstacles, collecting coins and using power-ups on the way.
Superhero movie, Krrish 3 had released Krrish 3: The Game that gave fans a chance to relive the life of a superhero while performing stunts and taking down enemies with cool gadgets and weapons. This trend of engaging fans with movie characters via games is only going to see a rise in 2014.
