Christmas is a time for giving and sharing and nobody brings this out better than Mog, the popular Sainsbury’s cat. The supermarket chain has topped all charts for the most favourite Christmas ad starring Mog. And it’s going to help Save the Children to improve child literacy in the UK.
In the 3.30 minute film, Mog sets off a chain of unfortunate events which almost ruin Christmas for the Thomas family. The chain of disasters wreck the place completely, leaving no hope for a merry Christmas celebration. And all this while the family is sleeping, seeing sweet dreams about Christmas.
Our heroic Mog saves the day though. He does not run away, instead he contacts the fire station that is on rescue mode right away. When the fire chief and his brigade visit the Thomas family, they are all sad and dejected to see their house in smoke. But, what happens then is beautiful.
Their neighbours come over with mops and brooms to clean up the mess, as well as bring delicious festive food, drinks and decorations. Everyone is seen enjoying the Christmas spirit: ‘Christmas is for sharing’.
Sainsbury’s has partnered with children’s book writer and illustrator Judith Kerr, to bring alive ‘Mog’s Christmas Calamity’, her latest book for Harper Collins Children. The book is on sale at Sainsbury’s stores and online for £3, alongside a specially created Mog soft toy for £10.
Judith Kerr, HarperCollins and Sainsbury’s will donate all their profits from the sale of this book to Save the Children. The supermarket chain has tweeted about raising over £1m already.

Sainsbury’s is also conducting a social media contest to boost sales for the book. One needs to simply post a video of themselves reading from the book and post it on Facebook or Twitter. They could star in a special online version of the story. The ones who make it to the online film will also receive a collection of great children’s books.
In a poll conducted by Opinium Research, over half of the respondents selected Sainsbury’s Mog film as their top Christmas ad of 2015. Sainsbury’s has reportedly already sold out of Mog toys!
The combination of beautiful storytelling, festive message, and the call-to-action has made for a memorable Christmas campaign by Sainsbury’s.
