The Indian National Congress party knowingly or unknowingly is digging its own grave on social media every other day. Today is the day of our Gandhi scion – Rahul Gandhi, who has come up with his own, bizarre definition of poverty – “Poverty is just a state of mind”. As repercussion, keywords – Rahul Gandhi and hashtags – #YoRahulSoDumb, #Pappu have made their presence on Twitter trends.

The Congress VP made this comment while speaking at a function in Allahabad on Monday. He hailed the role of self-help groups in advancement of marginalised section of society and stated that they provide the poor with “self-confidence to overcome poverty”.

Rahul was participating in a discourse on ‘Culture, Deepening Democracy and Most Marginalised Communities’, organised by noted social scientist Badri Narayan. But he stirred the hornet’s nest on the ongoing debate of the country’s poverty situation:

“Poverty is just a state of mind. It does not mean the scarcity of food, money or material things. If one possesses self-confidence, then one can overcome poverty.”

Rahul, who was accompanied by the party’s national general secretary Madhusudan Mistry, also cited an example of a poor woman in Amethi, who redeemed her self-esteem by getting associated with self-help group – Rajiv Gandhi Mahila Vikas Pariyojana.

But I guess it was too late for the Gandhi scion whose reputation is being ripped apart on social media, especially on Twitter for the insensitive remark he made for the poor of the nation.

Rahul Gandhi trends on Twitter for all wrong reasons

Netizens are already showing anger and frustration for the insensitive remarks from the Congress VP, who incidentally goes by the motto – “my one and only political aim is that I want to tune my ears to the voice of the poor and the marginalised.”

How can BJP supporters miss the opportunity and the hashtag #YoRahulSoDumb has been trending from morning in the India Top Trends. Hashtag #Pappu also joined the party and you can very well guess who must be pushing these hashtags to the top trends.

Listing here some of the tweets related to Rahul’s remark:

Recently Raj Babbar, another Congress politician trended continuously for days for his irrational statement that in Rs. 12/- you can find a wholesome meal in Mumbai.

“People should have full meals two times a day. How one can have it is a very good question that you have asked. Even today in Mumbai city, I can have a full meal at Rs. 12. No, no, not bada paav. So much of rice, daal saambhar and with that some vegetables are also mixed.”

If this was not enough another Congress leader, Rasheed Masood added more fuel with his statement:

“You can eat a meal in Delhi in Rs. 5, I don’t know about Mumbai. You can get a meal for Rs. 5 near Jama Masjid.”

The Congress VP has taken the whole debate and the meaning of poverty to the next level. Surely it will keep the netizens and the comedians on Twitter busy for today.
