Mobile penetration has had a proliferating growth in the country. While mobile is aggressively becoming the first screen in the country, a new report jointly published by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and IMRB states that the number of online user visits to mobile segment has gone up from 6.31 million in January 2013 to 20.70 million in January 2014, registering a Year on Year (YoY) growth of 228 percent.

The study reveals some more interesting facts by the data captured from the monthly tracker, which is listed below:

1. Online visits to branded apparel and designer label segments have increased by 113 percent and 41 percent respectively, when compared to the numbers of corresponding months last year.

2. The tracker also finds a YoY growth of 180 percent in online booking of railway tickets when compared with the numbers of corresponding month last year. Railway tickets booked online in January 2014 were 13.15 million as compared to 4.70 million in January 2014.

3. The online bookings of air tickets witnessed a decrease of 53% with 1.18 million bookings in January 2013 as compared to 1.53 million bookings in January 2014.

4. The number of resumes uploaded also witnessed nearly 100 per cent growth. Resumes uploaded on online job websites in January 2014 were 3.26 million. In January 2013, the number was 1.74 million.

5. The monthly tracker further indicates 56.44 million people accessed various e-tailing sites.

Sourced from all India active internet data, the monthly internet tracker findings come at a time when recently Kalpit Jain, COO- netCORE Solutions speaking at the 2nd Email Marketing Summit said, “India is expected to have 185 million mobile users by June 2014, and 35 percent subscribers view their mails on mobile, which provides a huge opportunity to market your products.”

According to another report by IAMAI, 95 percent of the mobile Internet users are using internet to communicate online.

A clear indication that mobile is becoming the first device for entertainment and other activities for Indians. Subsequently a great opportunity for marketers to engage with the users on mobile screens.
