Ameya Jagtap

One thing is for sure that the coming state and center elections in India will be fought on the turf of social media. It would be incorrect if I said it is not happening now. The experiment by politicians and their agencies is going on but then instead of making it a social ground some have turned it into another war zone of bad mouthing about their opponents and one good example is Congress For UP. However it gives me great pride to say that Ameya Jagtap, Pune’s very own Green Activist is not doing the same and using social media much effectively. Ameya, a NCP candidate and the Founder and Head of Youth to Youth Foundation, Pune is contesting for PMC elections, 2012 from ward 36. To promote this initiative and to reach out to the online junta, Ameya has a Facebook fan page and a Blog too.

Ameya’s Social Media Presence :

I landed up on Ameya’s profile via a Sponsored Facebook Ad that has been running for quite some time now. A community with 268 members and 70 out of them talking is good and the engagement that is being driven is quite cool. I am not sure if the content is driven by any agency but then I am sure Ameya must be keeping a check.  Though the page misses a landing page but the display picture serves the purpose. I am a big supporter of videos whenever we have such initiatives on Facebook. So a landing page with an embedded video with Ameya’s reason to be on Facebook and the vision by which he is driven would have really helped him to connect with his online junta in more social way.

Along with this Ameya should have tied his offline events with online too. Creation of Facebook events and inviting people from his community would not only make fans aware of such gatherings but it would have helped him spread the word of his initiative.

Pictures are the USP of Facebook with other things and fan or brand pages mint on them. Ameya’s page does the same and one of the content shared recently tells it all.

Facebook Engagement

Conversation is a key thing of any social network and it is being done on the fan page but then it is quite low. The Blog is more like a personal profile, which shouldn’t have been the case. It should have been used as a mode of communication with the junta of Pune. Having a Blog under a personal domain always helps so that is one more thing that the Blog needs ASAP along with the regularity in content. However I appreciate that Ameya has not tried to0 many social networks as it is a new initiative and has worked on what works best for him.

Building a community and nurturing them is not an easy job and it takes a lot of patience. The community that has been built by Ameya on social media is good and he should definitely carry this further. The objective of this engagement shouldn’t die with the end of elections and should be seriously taken further. If done so, I am very much sure that Ameya will see lot of appreciation and engagement in future via social media.

Dont think there is any agency involved, they dont even have a vanity URL! Though I really like it… looking fwd to seeing how it shapes up!

I got the same feeling but i am aware of agencies who charge 20K per month for Facebook page creation and then extra charges for Facebook content :) Yes I would love if it carries on.

Nice post, Prasant. It’s always good to know about progressive politicians who are willing to learn and experiment with this medium. Many politicians and their agencies have been using social media since the 2009 general elections, but few have mastered the art of building an engaged community. You have rightly mentioned that objective should not be electoral campaign but should be taken further. That would build trust of the community in the candidate. Soon not only centre and state elections, but also municipal and panchayat elections in India will be fought on the social media turf.
