The National Geographic Moment Awards is back this year and this time the winning clicks could be from your camera or your smart phone. The television channel has roped photo-sharing social app Instagram in the ultimate photography contest along with the usual one on Facebook. The prizes remain more or less the same like last year, only the mobile phone and tablet brands have changed this year. The grand prize is the chance to travel with the Nat Geo crew as a photo blogger on their next project. The other category prizes are Samsung Galaxy S4 for the Samsung Life Companion winner, an iPad Mini for the Instagram winner, and Nat Geo merchandise for the FOGG Deo adventure winner.
Nat Geo Moment awards Facebook app
You can participate through the app on the Facebook page, after you like the page. Upload as many pictures as you like but make sure you mention the category and enter required details as given in the form after you click ‘Participate’. Go through the FAQ and Terms & Conditions given at the bottom before you do that. Upload pictures of your companion, friends or family under the Samsung Life Companion category, whereas adventurous shots can be placed under FOGG Adventure.
‘Gallery’ displays photo submissions including yours. These can be sorted by old or recent, by category and you can also search by user name. The images are displayed on a Galaxy S4 screen along with image details and a vote button. These can be shared on Facebook and Twitter too.
‘Prizes’ gives you a snapshot of the various prizes on offer. The ‘Judge’ this time is Ami Vitale, a photojournalist and a contract photographer with the National Geographic magazine.
‘Instagram’ displays an array of images that have been instagramed using #NGMA. The last tab ‘Samsung Galaxy S4’ gives you more details about the smartphone.
One contest, one format, one new platform
Nat Geo Moment Awards, the most awaited and prestigious photography competition by National Geographic has chosen to maintain its trademark layout and design from last year. The Facebook app also resembles the design at the microsite. Good to see a standard design across both platforms but maybe a little different layout from the last time would have been way cooler. Nevertheless, the addition of Instagram is a refreshing change this year.
Besides, the incentives on offer are interesting, especially the mega prize of capturing behind the scenes in a Nat Geo assignment. The contest has also been promoted on the Facebook page of the television channel, inviting fans to participate and share. In fact, the 1.9 million strong fan base on the Nat Geo Facebook page had been informed about the contest way before it was launched.
National Geographic India does well again by introducing Instagram in the Nat Geo awards. This would enable a convenient way to participate for anybody with a smartphone, and not just the professional photographers. Apart from providing a platform for photography enthusiasts in the country, the campaign also helps the partner sponsors to promote their wares.
A simple photo contest for everybody, what do you think?
