The frenzy for mobile messaging apps is spiking up in the country. According to Medianama, mobile messaging and VoIP Company, Viber Media – that allows users to send free text messages, photo messages, voice messages, share locations anywhere in the world, and make free, HD-quality calls on iPhone, Android phones and tablets, Windows Phone, Blackberry – has released version 4.0 of its platform.

Additionally, the company has launched a marketplace for stickers or rich emoticons to spike revenues. A practice that is being followed by every popular messaging app today, after Line started making huge revenues from Stickers itself. According to Viber, the Sticker marketplace will offer both free and paid options to increase users.

Viber 4.0 has come up with some more interesting features such as compatibility with Android tablets. It has also added ‘Push To Talk’ feature for instant voice messaging that allows users to send short voice messages to each other.  However, Viber also adds that its Push To Talk feature is a four-step process which includes record, send, download and play, are all done at the same time thereby reducing its average response time to 4-6 seconds.

Other features that require a mention are message forwarding to any group or contact, new conversation backgrounds and group conversations with upto 100 participants.

The other major announcement by Viber recently was about having 15 million registered users in the country.

With the latest feature upgrades, Viber is pretty much in the league of popular messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Hike, Line, WeChat that are growing in the country. Among these WhatsApp holds the forte globally and in India too. Neeraj Arora, business development head at WhatsApp, recently in an interview to CNBC TV18, had shared that the messaging app has crossed 25 million monthly active users in India with zero marketing.
