Even All India Bhakchod (AIB), the brain behind the recent social media craze ‘AIB Roast’ knew that it had to happen, considering India is a funny country. The Maharashtra government has decided to investigate if the roast of actors Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor, held in Mumbai last month, was guilty of obscene language and content.
The decision was announced by Vinod Tawde, Maharashtra’s Minister for Cultural Affairs, reports NDTV. Additionally, DNA reports that police have initiated an inquiry into a complaint against filmmaker Karan Johar, actors Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, which alleged that the trio had used “filthy and abusive language” on AIB Roast event held in Mumbai. However it isn’t clear if the decision to investigate by Maharashtra Government has been influenced by the police complaint.
Akhilesh Tiwari, President of Brahman Ekta Seva Sanstha has filed a four-page complaint at Sakinaka police station, against the actors, filmmaker as well as the show organiser, among others. The show, which can be seen on YouTube and other websites, was extremely abusive and it is not only ruining the clean image of the Indian culture & women, but is also misleading today’s youth,” said Tiwari.
He further added, “I sought action against the event organisers and other performers as well, who passed dirty comments with such audacity. The police action would be a deterrent to them so that they would not dare to do such acts publicly in future.” The police has acknowledged that they have received the complaint and are inquiring into the matter.
Inspired by Comedy Central’s roasts of Hugh Hefner, Pamela Anderson, Charlie Sheen, among others, AIB uploaded the Indian version #AIBKnockout. The three part video series uploaded on YouTube is the roast of Bollywood stars Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor with Karan Johar being the roast master. The rude, offensive, filthy but entertaining show happened in December when both the stars along with other guests in the panel took on all kinds of filthy and outrageous insults to entertain a live audience.
The roast was based on the concept that everyone had to insult each other in the most bizarre way they could think of. In doing so the comedians left the audience in splits even if it wasn’t soothing to our society and culture. If you haven’t seen the videos then you seriously are missing something on the Internet but let us warn you in Karan’s words, “Let the filth begin.”
The act that raised 40 lakhs for charity, became an instant viral on social media collecting 2 million hits in 12 hours. While it was taken in the right spirit by many, it was found to be offending by a section of audience which thought that it was obscene and had no essence of comedy. Nonetheless #AIBKnockout became the talking point with it going viral and getting maximum coverage by major online publications.
This latest news of government investigation has, once again, resurfaced the double standards in Indian society, while adding to the virality of the videos. Twitter users are reacting against these double standards with AIB Roast becoming a major talking point on Twitter.
