Mobile is the primary screen for Indians and consumption of video on the go is also seeing an upward growth. According to an Ericsson report, 65 percent of users said that they prefer video streaming to downloading videos on their phones.
These data points might be exciting for marketers right now but for Kunal Lagwankar this was quite evident from early 2005. The CEO and Co-Founder at AdSparx has more than a decade of experience in building Internet video distribution products.
A pass out of VJIT engineering college, Mumbai, Kunal started his first venture in 2005 along with his colleagues Lilesh Ghadi and Ketan Barhate from Patni Computers. From building the first live mobile and internet TV content distribution today he is trying to solve the problem of video monetization on mobile.
Started in March 2012, AdSparx has clients such as Nex GTV, Vodafone, Airtel and Sony Liv. The company provides mid-roll technology for buffer-free ad streaming within online video content. An exciting field since digital ads market in India grew from Rs 2,260 crore in March 2013 to Rs 2,938 crore by March 2014. Of the total market, mobile advertising constitutes about Rs 250 crore.
However, the space also has the likes of Vdopia, InMobi and TribalFusion who also offer mid roll and pre-roll technologies for seamless streaming of ads between breaks in a TV show.
The startup which operates from Pune was also in the news for raising Rs 3.5 crore angel round of funding led by Indian Angel Network, followed by Mumbai Angels and GrowX Ventures.
I drove to their office which is situated in one of the busiest place in Pune on a Friday. After having an discussion with the AdSparx team, Kunal spoke to me extensively for 20 minutes about AdSparx and the market.
In this video Kunal speaks about his early life, how he jumped into the startup world and then founding AdSparx in 2012. He also talks about the road ahead for his startup and what he thinks about the mobile video space.
