Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made sure that not only politicians are active on social media but their respective government houses are too. In a latest development, Indian ministries like Finance and Defence will join social media to reach out to the common man on social networks like Facebook and Twitter.
Recently, the Defence Ministry was asked by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry to enhance its presence on websites such as Facebook and Twitter for publicity activities. A circular was sent to the Defence Ministry and it is being told that very soon the Defence ministry will be on social media soon.
This would be a big shift for the Defence Ministry which had chosen to stay away earlier, under the leadership of Defence Minister A K Antony. The present Defence Minster Arun Jaitley is already active on social media with a presence on Facebook and Twitter.
Additionally, Commerce and Industry Ministry has been already active for quite some time now. The Twitter account which has more than 13K followers has been active from May 30th 2014 under the leadership of Nirmala Sitharaman, MOS for Commerce & Industries Department. The tweets majorly focus on the latest developments of the ministry and updates on trade, industry and economy.

Twitter Head (News, Politics and Government) Raheel Khursheed adds that, “We are delighted that Twitter has become a choice of communication for the government. Twitter is one of the most democratic methods of communication… Commerce and Finance Ministries will have a presence on Twitter soon .”
He further added that Twitter is working with parties across the country. “We worked closely with the government to ensure that Cabinet is well represented in a media-rich way. It has been a busy year for us and first two quarters have been fantastic in terms of engagement and partnerships. And we hope it will continue to grow.”
