India missed out the desktop race with the world but it is competing hard in the mobile first world. According to a study, India Mobile Landscape 2013 released by research firm, Juxt states that India has 554.8 million mobile users and 143.2 million unique Internet users. The report further adds that around 94.7 million users access internet from their desktop/laptop, smart TV or mobile data connections such as GPRS/EDGE and 3G together.
The details of the report covered by IDR have some more interesting data points to be bookmarked:
1. India has 23.8 million individuals who access Internet from their mobile phones using a data connection such as GPRS or 3G. One million of them access Internet exclusively using data connection on their mobile phones, meaning they do not access Internet through any other means such as desktop/laptops.
2. 7.1 million (or 77%) of these users who access Internet exclusively through mobile data connections are in rural areas. A clear indication that the internet revolution via mobile is happening from rural areas.
3. As many as 110.4 million individuals use operator portals. Out of that, about 48.5 million do not access Internet through any other means.
4. There are 773.9 million live SIMs in India. Juxt defines a live SIM as any SIM which has validity irrespective of whether it is being used actively or not.
5. 554.8 million unique mobile phone users in India use 643.4 million active SIMs, counting multiple connections being used by them on one/multiple handsets/tablets.
6. India already has more mobile users in its villages as compared to its cities and towns. More than 298 million (54%) of the 554.8 million mobile users are in rural areas as compared to 256 million users in urban areas. With such a huge growth potential the penetration in rural areas is just 36% compared to 70% of urban area.
7. On-deck users (who also access Internet through operatorsâ€™ portals such as Airtel Live and Reliance R World are mostly into downloading of games, videos, and music; those who use Internet through a data connection use it more for communication.
8. Social networking, instant messaging and e-mail are three of the top four applications used by these regular data users.
The research done by Juxt was profiled on 121,311 individuals in 30,066 households across India.
These numbers, though limited to a certain set of users, still highlights on some interesting growth trends specially the adoption of the medium in rural areas. Some time back we had covered the ComScore report that focused on the digital adoption by the country. Despite considering only web users, the 2013 ComScore report shared some interesting facts about Indians such as:
1. With 25% time being spent on social networking, the activity grabs the largest share of PC screen time in the country. Besides this Email and Internet messaging hold a significant time too.
2. Video consumption grows by 27% and with more than 31 million viewers watching videos on YouTube, the social networking video site remains the number one destination for users.
3. Facebook is the most popular social networking site in the country followed by LinkedIn and Twitter. Besides this, new social networking sites like Tumblr and Pinterest are the fastest growing networking sites in the country.
