How Skills And Expertise In LinkedIn Can Help You?

LinkedIn is constantly upgrading its network with regular enhancements and ‘Skills & Expertise’ is one of them. Everyone has some skills like blogging, wordpress design or wildlife photography. Whatever be the skills, it differentiates you from the crowd.  LinkedIn values this differentiation, hence has added this feature. Have you added your skills on LinkedIn yet? If you haven’t, then read on to understand the ‘Why’ and ‘How’ of Skills & Expertise.

How to add Skills to your profile

There are two ways to add your skills to your profile. One way is going to your LinkedIn profile page and searching the Skills section. You can add new skills or edit an existing skill.

 

Editing Skills

Skills need to be defined by ‘Proficiency’ and the ‘Years of Experience’. Proficiency levels are Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Expert.

TIP:

  • These Skills act as keywords when saved. Click on any one of them and LinkedIn will fetch you all the people with the particular skill, Proficiency and Years of Experience.
  • Ensure that you specify the ‘Proficiency’ and ‘Years of Experience’ while adding new skills. This will help in accurate search.

Another way of defining Skills is by selecting the Sills Page. Search for a Skill in the search area. If the required Skill is added, then you would get the option of editing it. If it’s not there then you can add that particular skill.

A LinkedIn user can add 50 such skills but is it useful to add ‘Skills’?

  • You are known by your Skills  and the same applies to LinkedIn. People should know you by your skills on LinkedIn too.
  • Skills are keywords that are displayed on your profile. If you click on one of your Skills, it provides you the list of people having the same skill. This is a great way of building relationships with like minded people.
  • Skills make you noticeable and easier for opportunities to knock on your doors.

Finally, what more can the Skills page provide?

  • Search about ‘Skills and Expertise’ present on LinkedIn. Depending on the search LinkedIn also provides Related Skills.
  • List of people with the skill set that was searched and what is the degree of connection on LinkedIn.
  • Relative Growth of the skill. This is a bar graph that compares the growth of the particular skill with other relevant skills.

Relative Growth

  • Related Job opportunities for the particular Skill searched. It also shows a list of companies that are harnessing the searched skill set.
  • Display of Groups that cater to the skill set searched.
  • And find people with the particular search based on world locations.

Skills by Location

So if you are on LinkedIn and not using Skills, then you might be losing out on opportunities.

It specially helps if you are looking to get recruited; companies searching for candidates on LinkedIn generally have a work profile in mind and if their keywords match those in your skills you show up higher in their rankings. Adding your skills to your profile on LinkedIn is something vital which most people ignore.
