Indian Football clubs such as Mohun Bagan, East Bengal FC, Pune FC, etc. these days are also trying to play effectively on the social media ground to spread awareness amongst the younger generation of the country.
Football has been a sport that has interested me from my childhood days. Born in a town called Haldia, which is 300 KMs away from Calcutta, the likeness for the game was natural. But that doesn’t mean I was born listening to stories of Maradona or Ronaldo or Platini, etc. I grew up watching the rivalry between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal. A rivalry that often turned into a blood bath. So when I read the story about the Indian Football team’s social media presence being compared by International clubs, I was immediately on to it.
After struggling with the Facebook search for a while, I was finally able to find my favorite clubs present on social media and not only that – most of them have an amazing presence. The oldest club of Asia and one of my favorite club MCDowell Mohun Bagan AC has a fan following of more than 15,000. However, the oldest club of Asia has been left behind by the Kingfisher East Bengal FC, which has an impressive fan following of more than 450K fans. Along with this, the Pune FC has a fan following of more than 30,000 and Shillong Lajong Football Club has gathered a fan following of more than 10,000. However the clubs from Goa such as Salgaocar and Churchill Brothers Goa haven’t been able to get a strong fan following like other clubs.
The fan following of these clubs lies in the age group of 18-24 and the brand pages have done a pretty decent job in engaging with the fans. It is impressive to see clubs like Mohun Bagan and East Bengal using the time line feature of Facebook quite effectively. Facebook’s timeline feature is one the most impressive feature of a brand page for story telling and both the clubs have done really well.
The younger generation which is born seeing the likes of Rooney and Messi would not be aware of the glorious history of these clubs. So it would be helpful for the other clubs if they take an effort to use the timeline feature and share stories.
Content as we know is the key for any creative form and so it holds true for social media too. The content that is being shared by these clubs with their fans is a treat to watch. Clubs like Salgaocar, which have a small presence on Facebook are also sharing content that is aligned to the club, activities related to football, etc. I think this is the main reason why we also find fans actively engaging in each and every content of the different clubs.
Apart from this, some of the clubs have not only concentrated on Facebook itself but networks like Twitter and YouTube have been ventured too. East Bengal and Pune FC have a presence on Twitter. However East Bengal is the only one which is using Twitter effectively. Conversing with followers and sharing information on Twitter has been the main objective by the club.
I am sure that in the near future social media presence will also play a great role in the future of these clubs. For the time being, I think it is a good start for these clubs. Out of them all, East Bengal impresses me on the overall presence on social media.
