Young Techie From Pune Gets Killed Over The Morphed Images Posted On Facebook

A young IT professional was killed, allegedly by members of a radical Hindu outfit, after derogatory pictures uploaded on Facebook triggered tensions in Pune

The weekend tensions in Pune haven’t settled yet. According to IE, a young IT professional was killed, allegedly by members of a radical Hindu outfit, as he was returning home Monday night, after derogatory pictures of Shivaji and Bal Thackeray uploaded on Facebook triggered communal tension across the city over the weekend.

Police have identified the victim as Mohsin Sadiq Shaikh, a 24-year-old from Solapur district, who worked as an IT manager with a private firm in Pune. Mohsin was beaten to death by a mob after he was returning home from offering namaz. His friend Riyaz who was with him when the attack took place said, “Mohsin was targeted because he was wearing a skull cap and had a beard.”

The police have arrested seven people, aged between 19 and 24 years, who are associated with the Hindu Rashtra Sena, a radical outfit active in the state.

The incident is one of the outcomes of the weekend tensions that prevailed in Pune due to an allegedly objectionable photograph posted on Facebook about the warrior king Shivaji, his son Sambhaji and late Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray. The link of the post was further circulated through messaging apps on phones, triggering the violent reaction on Saturday night.

Later on with the help of Facebook, the posts were removed from the page which was created in 2013. For now the page has been deleted and police is waiting for Internet Protocol (IP) details to know which computer or mobile was used to commit the crime. Besides, an FIR has also  been registered against an unidentified person for posting controversial pictures.

Meanwhile more than 200 public transport buses and private vehicles were damaged in the past two days and incidents of arson, stone-pelting and rioting were reported from many parts of the city.
