Google is trying to revive the eCommerce segment in the country. After organizing the great online shopping festival, the Indian equivalent of Cyber Monday, the search giant has tied up with online retailer Myntra and Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan to host Asia’s first shoppable hangout.
A shoppable hangout is an activity by which one would not only be able to interact with the celebrity but at the same time users will have a chance to buy products. In the present case users will get a chance to ‘hangout on air’ with Hrithik Roshan on Myntra’s Youtube channel. While the users hangout and get to know Hrithik better they would have a chance to click and buy HRX products, a private label for casual wear, recently launched by Hrithik.
To make it interesting Myntra is running a contest to select one participant that would join Hrithik for the Google Hangout. The contest has two parts first is about answering five questions in the shortest possible time by January 15th 2014. Myntra will select winner on the basis of whoever tops the chart by finishing the quiz in the quickest time possible by 12pm on January 15, 2014.
Later by January 22, 2014, Myntra will select another top ten winners who will get Hrithik’s autographed posters and a Myntra gift voucher of Rs 2,000 each. The contest has been shared as an update on Facebook and on Twitter it is promoting via hashtag #HRXExtremeStyleQuiz.

Google and Shoppable Hangouts
Hangout has been one of the key products in Google Plus that Google has tried to market in various ways. In the beginning of October, 2013 Google scheduled to host the first shoppable Hangout On Air with Diane von Furstenberg. Google partnered with von Furstenberg and the CFDA to bring Google+ users a brand new ecommerce experience.
Furstenberg, along with co-host and Lucky magazine editor-in-chief Eva Chen, answered questions from guests about her career and inspiration, alternately touting various clothes and accessories from her fall collection. Those who watched the Hangout online saw photos of those items to the right of the Hangout video, which they could click to buy.
In mid-December 2013, Google associated with Indianroots.com in along with NDTVGoodtimes to host India’s first ever Virtual Wedding Show on Google Hangout. Designers like Rohit Bal, Sabysachi, Anita Dongre and others were part of the hangout.
The Hangout is definitely going to be an exciting thing for the one Hrithik fan but will he buy? May be if it is an exclusive product or Hrithik convinces the participant. There is no clarity on who would be the other participants in the Hangout but this could start a new trend altogether. Brands getting their brand ambassadors and interacting with fans while they also share about products of the particular label.
We will need to wait and watch to predict if the Shoppable Hangouts become popular like the great online shopping festival in the country.
