Happy 67th Independence Day

According to TOI Tech, 9 of 10 (or about 88%) online consumers in India share content on social media sites compared to 71% globally, according to a survey report conducted by Ipsos, a market and opinion research firm, which polled 18,150 respondents globally.

The study that highlights different facets of human behaviour on social media, informed that the popular shared item found in the poll is pictures, as about 6 in 10 (58%) indicated they had shared pictures online in the past one month of the poll period. This trend is followed by  ‘my opinion’ (56%), ‘links to articles’ (37%), a ‘status update of what/how I’m doing’ (36%), ‘news items’ (34%), etc.

According to the report, Turkey (93%) tops the poll of online consumers who have shared any content online in the past month. Sharing about the Indian demographics, the study also pointed that Indian citizens under the age of 35 (92%) are most likely to share any type of content on social media sites, in particular when compared with those aged 35 to 49 (86%) and those 50 to 64 (78%). Men (89%) lead the race when it comes to sharing content online with women (88%) not far behind.

However, the report fails to highlight if these numbers include the mobile consumption or are just about web results. Recently we had witnessed a similar report from Comscore that focuses on the digital adoption by the country. Focusing only on web users, the 2013 report shared some interesting facts about Indians such as:

1. With 25% time being spent on Social networking, the activity grabs the largest share of PC screen time in the country. Besides this Email and Internet messaging hold a significant time too.

2. Video consumption grows by 27% and with more than 31 million viewers watching videos on YouTube, the social networking video site remains the number one destination for users.

3. Facebook is the most popular social networking site in the country followed by LinkedIn and Twitter. Besides this new social networking sites like Tumblr and Pinterest are the fastest growing networking sites in the country.
