Review of Friends Club, Giftbig’s new venture wherein it has integrated itself with Facebook to bring the social layer to it’s existing business of online gifting.
Online gifting topped with a layer of social is turning out to be a hot business model for startups in India. The new face in the growing list of the business of social gifting is Giftbig. Giftbig delivers physical gift cards or vouchers to your Facebook friends depending on the occasions, which they can then redeem at the respective store across the country. The four year old company is a sister concern of QwikCilver Solutions Private Limited, a leading stored-value-card solutions company, serving millions of customers and corporate employees in India.
How does Giftbig work?
Friends Club is Giftbig’s new venture wherein it has integrated itself with Facebook to bring the social layer to it’s existing business of online gifting. So when you land on the page, you would be asked to log in via Facebook. After authentication, the website will pull up all the details related to your friends that will help you in gifting your friend. The entire process is divided into three simple steps:
1. Selecting a friend: The site makes life of the users quite simple by fetching data from Facebook and displaying it into two categories – a) Events and b) Friend.
“Events” is a list of friends that have a birthday occurring either today, the coming week or in this month. If you want to gift someone on your choice then you can click on the tab “Friends” and search for that person. (In my case, I am going to search for my friend Vijay who badly needs a gift to cheer up!)
2. Selecting a gift card: Once you have selected the person whom you want to gift, the next course of action is to select the gift card/voucher. The site also provides a lot of free gift cards that you can top up with a value of your wallet size.
3. Send to Friend: The last option is the payment option and providing details so that the gift vouchers are delivered to your friend.
How does it stand in the social gifting space?
Giftbig is not the first startup that is integrating with Facebook and it won’t be the last too. With a great website, clean execution and bigger network base, it can surely give a stiff competition to its competitors such as Badhai.in, 99Presents, Giveter and Exprestore.
Now, with Facebook jumping into the market with Facebook Gifts, though it would be more into the packaging rather than delivery of the gifting solutions, these startups still have the breathing space.
However, there are some areas of improvement that Giftbig can think of exploring since it has cracked the market of bringing the social layer. The site could now think of developing mobile apps that would be much easier and the preferred way going further.
As the site has integrated with Facebook, it could get other profile details and thus it could suggest the user with other intelligent forms of gifting or even provide a reminder service for important dates to gift near and dear ones. I think allowing such options in the ‘’My Profile” section would be great.
Nevertheless, at the moment Giftbig seems to have the core features perfectly drawn to attract Facebook users to it. So are you trying the social way of gifting while you are thinking of gifting these days or you still prefer the traditional route?
