2014 is set to end very soon. The month of December is a good time to look back at the last 11 months. After Bing, Yahoo and Google, now it is the turn for Facebook – the world’s largest social networking site to reveal the most-talked about topics from across the world.
Year In Review has been published by Facebook. Along with US review and Global Topics of 2014, the list includes India’s most talked-about topics of the year and the top checked-in places in the country. 2013 also had a similar Year In Review but this year Facebook has made it visually appealing.
Most Talked-About Topics in India
The first half of 2014 was dominated by Indian General Elections; social media played a very unique role during this election. Narendra Modi winning the elections by a huge margin also reflects the devotion he and his party had shown to social media. Facebook as a platform was utilized quite effectively since it is the largest social network in the country with 100 million active users. Unsurprisingly, the 2014 Indian general elections is the most talked about topics in India.
Sports dominates the next two spots – Indian Premier League and World Cup. While India has been a cricket crazy nation but thanks to social media, the Football World Cup saw great support from India too. World Cup also happens to be at the top of Global Topics in 2014, no surprises again due the game’s popularity.
The other highlight of 2014 for India was the Mangalyaan (Mars Orbiter Mission probe) which proved the entire world that the country with a billion plus population isn’t behind when it comes to innovation. 24th September, 2014 went down in history books as the day India made its first trip to Mars. Incidentally, it is also the cheapest successful mission to Mars ($74M). In doing so India joined US, the European Space Agency and the former Soviet Union in the elite club of Martian explorers.
The Mars Orbiter Mission (See also: 10 historic images that capture moments of the mangalyaan success) was the fourth most discussed topic on Facebook.
Not everything has been good in 2014 for India – Kashmir, known for its turmoil against militancy, had to face nature’s wrath. The state witnessed massive floods crippling the entire machinery, economy and people in the valley. Social media was used quite effectively to help victims during the natural disaster.
The rest of the five that made to the list are – Xiamoi’s entry to the Indian market, Alia Bhatt, Mary Kom Biopic, Malaysia Airlines and Conflict in Gaza. The last two – Malaysia Airlines and Conflict of Gaza also made to the list of Global Topics discussed in 2014 on Facebook.
Most Checked-Into Places in India
The most checked in places in India for 2014 includes India Gate, Taj Mahal, Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, Nandi Hills, Marine Drive, Mumbai, Marina Beach, Ramoji Film City, LuLu Mall, Hauz Khas Village, and Coorg.
Interestingly, Gurudwara Bangla Sahib was also the most checked into places in India. Leaving us to believe that the check-in behavior is still alive in 2014 too.
Find out more such lists by Facebook focused on the US. It is a better ‘Year In Review’ than 2013; let’s hope Facebook will add some visual data to the lists for next year.
