An article on Expressions 2012, Photography Contest at Tumbhi, an online platform for discovering talent

Are you one of those right-brained types? You like to create just about anything – a story, a visual or a photograph. Then you shouldn’t be sitting at your boring office desk tapping away till the weekend arrives.  Instead, click on, an online platform for singers, photographers, actors, scriptwriters, etc. and create your portfolio for free. You can also participate in the various writing, film-making and photography contests and if you win, you can make it big. Perhaps you may get assignments from production and media houses, publishers or magazines that are always on the look-out for fresh talent.

Founded in 2009 with the likes of film producer L C Singh, director and writer Anurag Kashyap, Founder of Indiaart  Milind Sathe, journalist and short film director Pankaj Shukla in the operational team, Tumbhi believes in promoting artistic talent and creating a global opportunity for them. Talented folks from any corner of the world can create their portfolios here and the best thing is that it is free. All you need to do to create your portfolio, is register yourself. The registration page provides for a Facebook login too in case you do not want to fill up your name, age and email details.

At present, Tumbhi is running a photography contest ‘Expressions 2012’ which is a Nature and Wildlife Special.  You can submit your best photographs from each of the categories – this may include seascapes, landscapes, animals, clouds or the sunset, just about anything that you have captured in your camera and want to show the world. The winners will be chosen by Sunjoy Monga, one of India’s most renowned Naturalist, writer and photographer.  If this isn’t enough, the winner also gets a Samsung Mobile and the runner up gets a Sony Digital Photo Frame.

The brand has a decent social media presence on the various popular social networks but what’s particularly impressive is that Tumbhi maintains a blog as well. Despite knowing fully well that the best tool to tell your story is a blog, I often find brands overlooking their blogs for the sake of Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc. It is a delight to read and helps in building a transparent image for the brand. There is a post with a beautifully compiled list of best websites and blogs of famous wildlife and nature photographers. This post has been written keeping in mind the numerous emails from fans asking for guidance.  It is for this blog alone that I got interested in the brand and began snooping around to know more. See, that’s how powerful a blog is!

Talking about creative platforms online and the big chance they can give you, Tumbhi had organised a script-writing contest ‘Paanch’ last year where five winning entries would be converted into short films under the Anurag Kashyap Films banner. Two of the winners have also signed contracts as script writers for Anurag Kashyap. Sometime back, we had reviewed a similar crowdsourcing initiative by film makers Vinod Chopra and Vipul Shah on Talenthouse India, another online platform for artists. Crowdsourcing ideas via social media is definitely beneficial for both the parties and Tumbhi stands apart due to the sheer reason that the contests are being judged by industry experts and not by mere ‘Likes’. The same holds true for the current photography contest too.

So hurry up all you photographers here, register at Tumbhi, pick up your cameras and give it your best shot, as the contest closes on April 5. Good Luck!
