Internet penetration in the APAC region is at its all time high and the pace of the growth is faster than any other market. The SouthEast Asia region, the group of six countries – Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines and Singapore itself is the home of 62 million online populations contributing more than 40% internet users from APAC, states the ComScore 2013 report.
The leader in measuring the digital world – after releasing “2013 India Digital Future in Focus” report which states that India with 73.9 million web users accessing the Internet – has also prepared a similar report for the region – “SouthEast Asia Digital Future in Focus”. However, the report excludes mobile users and considers only users above the age group of 15+ accessing the internet from a home or work PC.
Interesting numbers to take a note from the detailed whitepaper:
1. SoutEast Asia (SEA) online population has witnessed a healthy 9 percent growth from last year and has more than 62 million online users. Philippines as a country has witnessed the fastest growing internet audience growing by 22 percent since March. Vietnam, which has the largest audience in the region added 2 million internet users with a growth rate of 14 percent. In fact users from the country along with Thailand spent most of their time online in 2013.
2. The internet drive in the SEA region is being led by the youth of age group 15 to 24 years. The youth are also the heaviest web users. Countries like Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam, who have the biggest chunk of youth aged between 15 to 24, are leading. According to the report, in Thailand and Vietnam, 74 percent of the audience is under 35. Besides this there is a reasonably good contribution from aged groups like 45-54 and 55+ which was not the case when it came to India.
3. Mobile and Tablet traffic has been zooming ahead with an excess of 20 percent. The usage of devices on week days have an interesting trend. PC dominates the work hours, mobile hold the morning hours and tablets are more popular at night.
4. Like India, social networking platforms capture the largest percentage of consumers’ time in the SEA region. The interesting bit is that every SEA country ranks with a higher index than the worldwide reach of social networking sites. Philippines with 96 percent lead the percent of web users visiting social networking sites followed by Malaysia and Thailand.
5. World’s biggest social network Facebook dominates the SEA region; countries like Philippines, Thailand and Malaysia among the top 15 countries with the highest Facebook penetration globally. Facebook, followed by Twitter, LinkedIn and Tumblr are popular in the SEA countries. However, these figures could differ if ComScore considered the mobile messaging apps in the picture.
6. While Singapore’s news channels source traffic from within the region, blogs form an important component of news stream. Thailand and Indonesia with more than 71 percent, have the highest reach of blogs while the worldwide reach is mere 53 percent.
7. Google’s YouTube ranks as one of the first go to destination site when it comes to online entertainment in SEA region. The online video consumption also has seen a steady growth over the past year and Vietnam leads at the top with a 14 percent increase over the year. However, the videos viewed per visitor have seen a drastic drop while watching them on PC. A clear indication that mobile and tablet devices are becoming the first choice when it comes to entertainment on the go.
Google dominates the video viewing overall in the region, with the exception of Philippines where more than 14 percent videos are watched on Facebook. Countries like Malaysia (76%) and Singapore (77%) hold the dominance of Google.
