Chinese Internet giant Tencent’s messaging app WeChat is making waves in the market. After recently announcing that the messaging app had hit a new high of 235.8 million monthly active users, it has now shared that it has passed 100 million registered user accounts outside China, reports TNW.
Last we had heard about the global numbers was in the month of July when the app touched 70 million users from overseas. It is also worth noting that the app had announced 50 million users in the month of May. The app doubled its numbers in overseas market in a short period of three months.
WeChat is witnessing a staggering growth and this is because of aggressive global marketing push. The company has also announced that it has a strong presence in markets like India, Malaysia, Mexico and Philippines. Countries like Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand are also supporting WeChat’s growth.
India has been a big focus for the messaging app when the country is today the third largest smartphone market in the world. Like most of the brands, Tencent integrated Bollywood with its app to connect with the youth. Integration with Bollywood movies and endorsing latest Bollywood actors Parineeti Chopra and Varun Dhawan have been some of the marketing initiatives by WeChat India.
Recently we saw the firm focusing in the South American market along with South Asian market. To get the people talking WeChat launched a TV commercial which featured football star Lionel Messi and the TVC was aired in 15 countries. The Spanish ad expected getting traction from South America and Spain. A similar move was adopted by LINE when it focused in the Spanish market and the app shot to success. But the Japanese headquartered app – LINE got Spanish movie stars Hugo Silva and Michelle Jenner to set up so-called Official Accounts on LINE and star in TV commercials for the app.
WeChat has been expanding in the international market but its biggest rival WhatsApp recently while introducing Voice Messaging feature revealed that the app is up from its 250 million to 300 million active users. Besides this, the app – also the most popular messaging app in India – has revealed that the country contributes 20 million monthly active users. Along with India, countries like – Germany, Spain and Mexico are the only other countries that have over 20 million monthly active users.
The latest numbers further build up the dominance of WhatsApp globally and in India as well. However WhatsApp is yet to do any kind of marketing and at the same time WeChat acknowledged in its Q2 2013 earnings that its net profit for the second quarter was down sequentially due to a “significant” increase in promotional activities for the chat app in international markets.
