September the 15th is a significant day in a nation that produces more than a million engineers every year. It is the birthday of M. Visvesvaraya, one of India’s eminent engineers who helped in the construction of many systems.- he was the chief engineer responsible for the construction of the Krishna Raja Sagara dam in Mysore as well as the chief designer of the flood protection system for the city of Hyderabad. This ‘Diwan of Mysore’ was also awarded a Bharat Ratna, and knighted as a Knight Commander of the British Indian Empire by King George V for his contributions to the public good. As a tribute to him, 15th September is celebrated as Engineer’s Day every year in India.

Every Indian parent wants their child to be an engineer with a degree from at least one of the several IIT institutes in the country. Engineers also tend to command a respectable position in the marriage market. Not all of them pay back to society as engineers, some of them are our top cricketers, some are actors and some apply their engineering brains in business administration. Engineers are also the butt of jokes and sometimes produce the best of comedians!

The day began with #EngineersDay trending on Twitter and as one might expect tributes to M Visvesvaraya floated around.
