There is a old saying in Indian politics – whichever party rules Uttar Pradesh goes on to rule India too. So this is why you can see each and every party not leaving any stone unturned. However with the changing times, political parties have realized that only offline connections won’t help, they need to have online presence too. The power of social media was quite evident during the Anna revolution by IAC. So this time most of the political parties have also tried to mint support via social media. Congress started a Facebook fan page Congress For UP with Rahul in center but the page was more of a battleground. Rather than focusing on what it is doing and what could be done, it has focused on brick batting the opposition. BJP that considers itself the most tech-savvy political party does have a presence though its not that effective. It recently launched Youth TV and mobile apps for the most popular platform against the slew of Youtube videos launched by Congress. However in all this, one party that is giving stiff competition offline as well as online is the Samajwadi Party and this time the baton is in the hands of the young leader Akhilesh Yadav.
I was really charmed by the Facebook ad that has been created by the SP party and its team. The Facebook ad that popped on my side bar had the right content to make me click and have a look at the Facebook page. The ad asked what are the areas that a UP chief minister should concentrate and share them with Akhilesh Yadav. Not sure how many of those would be considered but then it strikes the right chord and the message is delivered. Unlike the ruling party BSP, which has used Blogging as the main online weapon for venting out frustration on all the opposition parties.
The Facebook page of SP not only has adopted the new brand pages of Facebook with timeline but also has implemented it smartly. Even though the timeline feature has not been used well, the cover page is cool and the apps are well displayed on the page. I think this is really cool when most of the Indian brands are still sleeping and yet to adopt the new timeline feature for Facebook brands SP being a political party has done it.
The content that is mostly being delivered in Hindi has focused on its objective that is creating awareness among the netizens about Samajwadi Party, the work they are doing and what are their plans if they are elected as the ruling party in UP. Apart from that, the wall is covered with amazing pictures of wherever Akhilesh Yadav is doing rallies and reaching out to people. I think this is a wonderful way of using social media as I had a feel good factor when I visited the Facebook page unlike the Congress Facebook page.
With a fan base of more than 4000 fans on Facebook, SP has launched a series of videos targeting the youth and prosperity in UP. The party has created a Youtube brand page, which has the listing of the videos and they are also shared with the Facebook fans too.
Undoubtedly, experts were hired but then what’s wrong in that as long as the message is clear I think the job is done. Though winning the real battle has still some time to go but for me Akhilesh Yadav and his party SP have done a better job compared to other parties on social media. And according to NDTV, in the run-up to the elections, Akhilesh has crisscrossed the entire state with a 10,000-km rath yatra and has held more than 800 rallies over the last six months. I think that is enough to give some indications on who can be the young face of UP!
Do let us know what do you think of SP ‘s social media presence and if you are aware of any other parties who are doing well, then just leave a comment about it.
