Airtel Digital TV Partners With Twitter To Bring Live Tweets On TV

Airtel Digital TV, the DTH service today announced a first-of-its-kind integration with Twitter, to display LIVE Tweets on TV

TV and Twitter are getting closer day by day. Ahead of its IPO, Twitter in the country has tied up with India’s first DTH service provider Airtel Digital TV, the DTH service arm of leading telecom operator Bharti Airtel to bring live tweets on the idiot box.

Announced earlier in the day, the concept is being said as an innovation in the DTH industry across the world that allows customers to experience Twitter on TV. Starting from tomorrow Airtel Digital TV customers will now be able see what the world is tweeting about popular TV programmes, celebrities, sports personalities, etc. on their TV screen itself. Besides customers will be able to tweet about their favourite TV shows, celebrities, sports/ sports personalities or any ongoing TV programme across channels while watching it.

The service comes at no cost and can be enjoyed by all Airtel Digital TV customers across the country. The service powered by Brizz TV, will need customers pressing the green key on their Airtel Digital TV remote to enable and access the service. Customers can easily close the Tweet window or resume back at any given time by pressing the same green key again.  Customers can send their Tweets on any TV show with the specific hashtags prompted on their TV screen and it shall be broadcasted live by Airtel Digital TV. Right now the service will be available on selected TV channels.

It would be interesting to access the service when it goes live tomorrow and will update on the same. Twitter has been more of a success with TV and has become the second screen over the last few months in India.

But what is more interesting is that while Google is still forming partnerships with DTH providers in the country to bring its video social network YouTube on TV, Twitter has already made the first move. Though one can’t compare both the moves since Twitter is encouraging conversations and YouTube is bringing its curated and fresh content on TV in a country where internet bandwidth is still a problem. I am sure in the coming days Google must be making its big announcement on the same but till then I am excited to check out how the Twitter integration will play major role in driving conversations while television programs are being aired.

Twitter would gain more in terms of creating deeper reach in a country which is yet to see a bigger breakthrough on the 140-character social platform. The service also promises to work even for customers who either have no access to internet or are not active on Twitter currently. Indeed it is a first-of-its-kind in the country and will depend on its implementation; further this would be a new avenue for Twitter to push its premium advertising too.
