Team India is on a high and so are fans. If last Sunday was perfect then this Sunday has been one tremendous cricketing delight. After demolishing Pakistan for the sixth time in a World Cup match, India broke the jinx by winning against South Africa for the first time in a World Cup game. India – the defending champions made both online and offline go berserk yesterday with their tremendous batting performance, top notch fielding and a tight bowling attack to win the match.

Like the India-Pakistan match, the India-South Africa match too dominated the social media trends (to be read as Twitter). Here are the five major trends that ruled social media during the #IndVsSA cricket match which India won by 130 runs.

1. #IndVsSA

Indians dominated both MCG and social media. While we have to wait for official data, one can simply put that Indians overpowered SA on social media as it did on the ground. #IndVsSA started trending from a day prior to the match and was at the top of Twitter trends all day yesterday. After the win, almost 8 trends out of 10 on Twitter were about the cricket match and India’s massive win over South Africa.

Listed below are some of the tweets from #IndVsSA:

2. Star Sports wins again

Someone said on Twitter – “We store tweets in draft, Star Sports stores ads.” Along with India, Star Sports has also been the clear winner on digital and TV during this World Cup. The official broadcaster of the game recorded more than 25 million views on digital for the India-Pakistan match – one of the highest for a single game in a sporting event across the globe in one country. Star Sports started from where it left for the Pakistan match, It came up with another spectacular ad based on the stats that India has been beaten thrice in the World Cup by South Africa. The video uploaded on YouTube instantly became viral on social media and fetched more than 1 million views on YouTube.

Built on a similar sentiment as the India-Pakistan ad, the video got picked up on Facebook, Twitter and most of the online publishers making it an instant hit. But Indian fans are crazy and they can’t see India losing anytime, so Be YouNick the online content creators came up with a fitting reply to the Star Sports ad. Posted just four days ago the video is inching close to 2 million views on YouTube and is trending at the top on YouTube India.

On the match day when South Africa started giving up on the field, most of the creative minds were looking what would be Star Sports’ real time marketing message post India’s win. Comparing the reply Star Sports posted after India’s win over Pakistan, the video message not only trolls South Africa but does not spare our arch rival Pakistan. The #MaukePeChauka 30 second video has already fetched 428 K views and is winning Indian hearts all over social media.

3. #MaukaMauka

With India winning the game, #MaukaMauka inspired by the Star Sports ad has been trending on Twitter. While people on Twitter made sure to celebrate the victory, they also shared their appreciation for the brilliantly timed Star Sports ads.

4. Sachin Tendulka’s selfie

One thing is evident, you cannot keep India’s cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar away from the game. Having retired from the game, he was present at the MCG with India playing against South Africa. Sachin who is the ICC World Cup ambassador took away the attention whenever the camera zoomed on him. Dressed in a lavender shirt with black shades, he cheered for the Indian team and posted a selfie on social media from the MCG.

Obviously how could India lose the game when the god himself was present on the venue supporting India.

5. Shikhar Dhawan

The opening batsman for India – Shikhar Dhawan finally had his day at the MCG. Playing very cautiously at the start of the game, Shikhar went on to make his career best 137 runs before the 86 thousand plus spectators at the ground. While it might be a big relief for the cricketer himself who had been criticized severely for his continuous poor batting form and for the Indian cricket team, fans were also overjoyed by his batting display on the ground and on social media.

ICC’s 2015 world cup is already becoming a big hit with the added glitz from social media. India next plays UAE, a team with whom it has never played before. What will Star Sports come up with next?
