A blog is an integral part of a blogger. The posts wrapped in his blood and sweat catch the limelight when readers appreciate them. Comments on blogs give a clear indication that the posts are striking well with the community. However, small mistakes or sins by bloggers can decrease comments and lead to zero comments. Knowingly or unknowingly, we bloggers do a lot of mistakes that kill our blog gradually. The seven deadly sins or mistakes that I am aware of are shared below:
1. Content not matching the objective
If you are a professional blogger, then obviously you are driven by an objective. For example, if I am a photography blogger, then generally I would be talking about photography, tips and tricks, reviews etc. My community would expect the same but when my content fails to match my objective, then obviously it would lead to decreasing comments. My readers won’t find a reason to visit my blog, forget commenting on it. So if you want to decrease the comments in your blog, then simply forget the objective of your blog.
2. Ending posts without an intriguing question
As a blogger, the content I write is always driven towards a set of readers. So comments are energy boosters for my blog but this energy booster can turn into a demotivating factor if there is nobody commenting on it. One of the primary reasons could be that you are finishing your post without any intriguing thoughts. Ending the article without asking any thought provoking questions or by not asking intriguing questions will give more reasons for not commenting on your blog. As a blogger, you are not motivating or provoking a reader to think and comment on it.
3. Not having a third party commenting system
You have a great blog, great content but you have an age old commenting system which will only lead to frustration for your readers. Incorporating a third party commenting platform like Disqus, Livewire, Facebook etc. helps readers while commenting. So if you are not using any third party commenting platform, then you are creating problems for readers and in a way demotivating them from commenting on your blog.
4. Not responding to comments on your blog:
Readers take out time and read your blog; they also invest time in expressing their thoughts in the form of comments. Bloggers who think responding to readers or respecting their time is useless, let me assure you that your blog will never have any comments. Not responding to comments on your blog is the ultimate recipe for decreasing comments.
5. Not having Sharing widgets
Sharing of your content on social media networks is a must for your blog. As a blogger, if you think that people will get dreams of your beautiful posts then you have just unlocked one more way to decrease comments on your blog. Not having sharing buttons or widgets certainly will lead to decrease in traffic and comments on your blog.
6. Not Engaging with Readers
Engaging with readers is a must when there are so many great blogs present on the internet. Engagement is a way of respecting readers who have taken the time to comment and also driving it to the next level of relationship building. However, if you as a blogger don’t believe in engaging with readers, then you are sure to survive in a ghost town alone. No engagement leads to zero comments in blogs.
7. Deleting Comments
Comments are not negative or positive; they are just thoughts expressed by readers. Positive thoughts make us happy but as a blogger we need to have a thick skin and take negative comments with a bold face. As a blogger if you can’t take negative criticism and you believe in deleting comments, then you should write a private blog. Deleting comments continuously will lead to decreasing comments and also spread a negative word of mouth. However, negative comments shouldn’t be misunderstood with spam.
8. Awaiting Comment Moderation
When a reader chooses to comment on your blog, it means she has given her valuable time to your blog so try to respect it. However, if you don’t respect it and have features such as ‘awaiting comment moderation’, then you have made sure that readers don’t come again to your blog. One may debate this point but I want to make my readers time worth it. So have this feature and be sure of a decrease in the comments on your blog.
These are the eight sins I avoid on my blog so that I can foster great healthy comments by readers. Do you avoid any other sin on your blog?
