Are You Influential On Social Media?

I believe by asking this question,‘Are you influential on Social Media?’, I have opened the Pandora’s Box. Well if it is, then let it be. Social media has evolved in the last couple of years and India is keeping pace too. As social media moved on from why to how, the word influence or influential started emerging. It was pretty obvious as in every field there are leaders that guide its followers, the same sentiment followed in social media and trust became the ultimate driving factor of being influential.
But then we all are fascinated by numbers, how we are performing and how are others performing. This need led to the birth of a lot of apps for calculating your online influence. In short, how influential are you and who is above you and below you. Today with a lot of debate surrounding the algorithms, we have two industry accepted standard tools - Klout and PeerIndex.
In India, PinStorm - the leading search engine for marketing agencies has the ‘Pinstorm India Influencers’. Pinstorm has ranked Indian residents, NRI’s and Brands after aggregating PeerIndex and Klout score. By and large, the list covers most of the social media influencers but if you think you are missing then just submit your @Twitterhandle here and you should be in the list next day. It’s not just PinStorm but Edelman now joins the party. Edelman that had recently launched Tweetlevel and Bloglevel, has revealed a list of ‘Indian Online Influencers.’ The infographic shares the method of ranking your performance and also shares the influential junta on Twitter and Blogs. However, Pinstorm has a more comprehensive list in comparison to Edelman.
But the burning question is: do these numbers or ranking matter? Social Media Evangelists would say, no it is dubious and brands would love to wear the score badge on their head. It is true that there are problems. Thought leader, Tom Webster who has been really skeptical about Klout also feels that a lot of work is going on in these platforms. However, your objective on social media could also answer this question. So for brands and people who are using social media with the objective of brand awareness, building online brands and helping people, then it will be helpful if you track your social media performance and follow such developments.
Nevertheless, engagement with your community is the key and these rankings shouldn’t control it. So be real and make your social engagement count.
